Acid attacks in India have been a grave issue for many years now. Acid attacks involve perpetrators throwing acid on a victim's face or body, causing severe burns and disfigurement. Such attacks are often carried out by jilted lovers, disgruntled employers, or family members seeking revenge.
According to statistics, there were 244 reported acid attacks in India in 2019. However, the actual number is believed to be much higher, as many such cases go unreported. One of the reasons for this is that the legal process for filing a case and seeking justice is lengthy and complicated.
In an effort to combat acid attacks, the Indian government has introduced stricter laws and penalties for perpetrators. Offenders can now face up to life imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh. The government has also banned the sale of acid to individuals without valid identification and registration.
Various non-governmental organizations and activists have been working towards raising awareness about acid attacks and providing support to survivors. The acid attack survivors are being given vocational training and are being helped to get jobs.
Despite all these measures, acid attacks still continue to occur in India. However, the number of incidents has reduced over the years, which is a positive trend.
